Loaded and Ready
God’s Pit Crew’s trucks are loaded and ready to respond
to the destruction left by Hurricane Isaac in the Gulf Coast area.

Our trucks are carrying over 100,000 pounds of relief supplies including bottled water and Blessing Buckets containing personal hygiene supplies and other essentials. We are also taking our fully equipped tool trailer and our heavy equipment to help clean up devastated areas. Our Volunteers will be leaving the GPC warehouse at 6AM Thursday morning and traveling over 800 miles to the Louisiana Gulf Coast area. At this time we are unsure of the exact location where we will be working.

Donations are always appreciated via our website (www.godspitcrew.org) to help offset the
enormous fuel costs. For continuous updates and photos of where the Crew is and what we’re doing, visit our Facebook (facebook.com/godspitcrew) and follow the progress there!

Stuart Walmart Donates to "Tools for Schools"

Thanks to our Stuart Walmart for participating in "Tools For Schools" donation program!

Over the past few weeks, Walmart has been collecting school supplies from our local community. These supplies were delivered to the school board office and will be distributed to each school within the Patrick County Public Schools.

God’s Pit Crew:
Working, Watching, Preparing

While hard at work on projects here at home and busy with local distributions to area non-profits, we are keeping a close eye on Hurricane Isaac.

Preparations began last week to respond if we were needed. Now as Hurricane Isaac bears down on the Gulf Coast, we are gearing up to respond to potential devastation.

Our fleet of tractor trailers are currently being loaded with relief supplies and equipment to be ready to head out the moment that the storm passes and help and offer hope to those who will be affected.

For more information or to make a donation, please call

TRAFFIC ALERT: EXPECT HEAVY TRAFFIC IN HILLSVILLE
FOR ANNUAL FLEA MARKET AND GUN SHOW

Travelers heading to the annual Hillsville Flea Market and Gun Show during Labor Day weekend should be prepared for considerable traffic delays. The town’s popular event will be held Friday, Aug. 31 through Monday, Sept. 3. People not attending the flea market and gun show are encouraged to avoid the area altogether.

Thousands of visitors are expected to converge on a one-mile section of Route 58 Business in Hillsville. As a result, sidewalks will be crowded with pedestrians and bumper-to-bumper traffic will be moving at a crawl throughout the area. Drivers should use extra caution, watch for police directing traffic and pay attention to electronic message boards in the area.

The Virginia Department of Transportation advises travelers of the following traffic information:

Interstate 77 - exit 14 (Hillsville/Galax).
Those planning to attend the Flea Market and Gun Show are encouraged to take I-77 and use exit 14 (Hillsville/Galax) onto Route 58 Business. Congestion is expected on I-77 in this area and police may be directing traffic at the exit 14 and Route 58 Business interchange to promote safe travel. Traffic will be directed onto Route 714 (Old Galax Pike) to help alleviate congestion. Motorists should watch for stopped vehicles in this area. Westbound Route 58 Business traffic will be reduced to one lane approaching the I-77 interchange from Old Galax Pike.

Route 58 Bypass western interchange with Route 58 Business

Motorists using Route 58 Bypass’ western interchange to exit onto Route 58 Business should use extreme caution and watch for heavy traffic congestion. Those not attending the event and traveling westbound on the bypass should use the left lane to avoid exiting vehicles. Drivers are advised not to park on the Route 58 Bypass or on the ramps onto Route 58 Business. “No Parking” signs will be posted around the interchange.

Route 52

Route 52 event traffic can use Route T-780 (Howlett Street) or Route T-1020 (West Grayson Street). Northbound Route 52 traffic will not be permitted to turn left onto westbound Route 58 Business. Southbound Route 52 traffic will not be allowed to make right-on-red turns onto westbound Route 58 Business.

FAIRY STONE CONCERT FEATURES
SIMPLE GIFTS OF THE BLUE RIDGE

The nights are getting longer and the shadows darker as summer draws to a close. That must mean it is time for the appearance of “Simple Gifts of the Blue Ridge” at Fairy Stone State Park sponsored by the Reynolds Homestead on Friday, August 17 at 7:30 p.m.

“Simple Gifts” performs folk music, Appalachian fiddle tunes, early American hymns, Irish tunes, and original compositions. Wonderful sing-along music, the concert is free, but park admission does apply.

The members of Blacksburg, Virginia, area folk group Simple Gifts of the Blue Ridge are Charles Bostian, Jack Webster, Carolyn Smith, and Marya Katz, who together sing and play hammered dulcimers, guitars, flute, bass, and percussion. Their repertoire ranges from train songs ("The Wreck of the Old Ninety-Seven") to contemporary favorites ("Waltzing with Bears”) and love songs ("The Oak and the Ash").

More favorites include Appalachian fiddle tunes ("Gray Cat on a Tennessee Farm"), early American hymns ("Babylon Has Fallen" and "Amazing Grace"), Irish tunes ("Planxty Irwin"), and original compositions like Marya's hammered dulcimer duet "Mountain Mists.

The concert is free to the public and is held in the park amphitheater. In the event of rain, the concert will be moved to the covered picnic shelter. Park admission rates do apply.

Patrick County receives funding, Sign up announced for Agricultural Best Management Practices Cost-Share Funds

Submitted by: Patrick Soil & Water Conservation District

The Patrick Soil and Water Conservation District has been allocated cost share funds through Virginia’s Agricultural Best Management Practices (BMPs) Program to help improve water quality in Patrick County. These funds are made available through appropriations by the Virginia General Assembly and are derived entirely from state sources.

Eligible BMP practices include but are not limited to: Grazing Systems, Reforestation of Erodible Crop and Pasture Land, Permanent Vegetative Cover on Cropland, Cover Crops, and Waterways. Please stop by the District office for a complete list of Best Management Practices’ that are eligible for assistance, which is located in the USDA Service Center behind Stuart Baptist Church. BMP’s are cost-shared on a percentage basis up to 75 percent or flat rate incentive payments.

Each BMP application will be ranked and funded according to a simple BMP ranking criteria approved by the Patrick Soil and Water Conservation District Board. Priority will be given to land with the highest water quality improvements. Other program requirements and restrictions vary per practice. SWCD’s administer the voluntarily best management practice (BMP) program to encourage farmers to use BMP’s on their land to better control sediment, nutrient loss, and transportation of pollutants into our waters from excessive surface flow, erosion, and leaching.

Those interested in cost-share assistance are encouraged to apply now during the sign up period. To schedule a field visit or for further details , please contact Tony Collins or Sandra Heath at the Patrick SWCD at (276) 694-3121, ext 3 or by stopping by the District office, which is located in the USDA Service Center at 135 Stonewall Court behind Stuart Baptist Church along with the USDA Farm Service Agency and the Natural Resources Conservation Service offices.

CAPTION FOR PICTURE: Pictured above is a watering trough installed for livestock after fencing out streams, one of the many best management practices available through agricultural cost-share and the Patrick County Soil and Water Conservation District.
